Rare Open-Handled Redware Jar with Elaborate Manganese Slash Decoration, East TN origin, circa 1800-1860, ovoid jar with footed base, tall, narrow collar, and open loop handles, profusely-decorated around the body and handles with brushed manganese-slip slashes under a clear lead glaze. Desirable form and decoration. Literature: For a closely-related example, see Wahler, Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Part One, p. 185, fig. 206 and p. 228, fig. 206. Significant in-the-making spalling and/or post-firing wear to glaze. A 1 3/4" x 1" loss to rim. Shallow chipping to foot. H 12".
