Exceptional Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Profuse Incised Decoration, attributed to the Jacob Eichelberger Pottery, Talladega County, AL origin, circa 1875, ovoid jar with flared rim and arched lug handles, extravagantly-decorated throughout with combed incising in the form of four crossing wavy bands separated by three horizontal bands. Surface covered in a mottled olive-green alkaline glaze with traces of rutile to interior of rim. Incised "3" at shoulder, although jar appears closer to four gallons. An outstanding example of the region's distinctive incised decorative treatments. Provenance: Purchased by Wahler in September of 2005 at Jim Norman Antiques & Auctions, LLC, Hartselle, AL. Excellent condition with light wear to interior of rim. H 16 3/4".
