Outstanding Glazed Stoneware Sugar Jar with Lid, TN origin, possibly Sevierville, second half 19th century, stylishly-potted, ovoid form with pronounced foot, arched lug handles, two coved moldings to shoulder, and a squared rim. Intricate chip carving to base, incised wavy line accent to body, three rows of scored treatment to rim and shoulder area, saw-toothed incising to rim, and scoring to handles. Original domed lid is wheel-thrown and hand-carved with a potter's knife, embellished with chip carving to the knob and outer edge. Surface of each covered in a blackish-brown glaze. Wonderful form. Provenance: Originally found by Al Dotson in a Sevierville, TN antiques shop. Jar with a large professionally-restored section to one handle, two in-the-firing chips to opposing handle, and a small chip to foot. Lid with a few small chips to underside of edge and chipping to flange on underside. H 8 3/8".
