Rare Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Sullivan County, TN origin, circa 1860-1880, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and open strap handles with triply-depressed terminals, the surface covered in a clear salt glaze. This vessel follows the form of a typical Sullivan County, TN redware jar. Exhibited: Tennessee Turned, Earthenware and Stoneware Made in East Tennessee 1800-1900, Museum of East Tennessee History, May 16-October 30, 2011. Provenance: Found in Dryden, Lee County, VA. A crack across underside, continuing 6 1/2" up one side of jar and 3/8" up opposing side of jar. A minor in-the-firing chip to top of one handle. A small piece of adhered clay to one side. Small rim chips. H 11 1/2".
