Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Iron Slip Decoration, attributed to the Whelchel Pottery, Gaffney, SC, area, late 19th century, slightly-flared crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handle, the surface coated in a streaky, light-brown alkaline glaze and decorated with three stenciled floral motifs with arching pattern above. Freehand "3" to shoulder. Exhibited: York County, SC Historical Society. Proper right handle was lost in the making. Minor wear to opposing handle. Two hairlines from rim on reverse measuring approximately 3 1/2" and 2 1/2". Reverse with a 2" horizontal surface crack to rim, including a small flake. A 4" line from rim on interior, visible on exterior as a 1 3/4" line above proper left handle. Interior front of rim with a faint 1 3/4" line, probably in-the-firing. A 2" in-the-firing fissure to underside and a minor in-the-firing fissure to underside, not visible on interior. H 9 3/4" ; Diam. 11 3/4".
