Rare Large-Sized Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Incised Markings and Glass Runs, Edgefield District, SC origin, possibly David Drake, circa 1840, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and arched lug handles, the surface covered in a gray-green alkaline glaze with tannish spotting and mottling from the clay showing through. Unusual applied glass runs descending from the handles. Shoulder with rare incised notation of two vertical slash marks followed by a cross. Further incised with five or six punctates above. Jar measures roughly six gallons. Wahler called this pot "Blondie." Very nice condition. An approximately 4 1/4" Y-shaped line descending from on reverse, extending into one handle terminal. Surface with a few in-the-firing pings and a tiny surface-level fissure with a faint 2 1/4" line extending through it. Minor surface wear. H 17".
