Salt-Glazed Stoneware Basket with Brown Slip Decoration, Middle TN origin, late 19th or early 20th century, ovoid form with splayed foot and wide, flaring collar, the rim with applied arched handle, the surface dipped in a reddish-brown slip and covered in a clear salt glaze. Provenance: In her notes, Wahler states that this vase in her notes: "Purchased in Monterey, TN in the 1920s off a wagon of pottery packed in straw (hay?) that came up from the Sparta area to peddle pottery. . . ." Excellent condition with a minor base chip and a small in-the-firing chip to underside. H 10".
