Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Eagle and Flags Motif, probably Alderman & Scott / Belpre, OH, circa 1880, cylindrical crock with tooled body, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a spread-winged eagle with shield across its chest, clutching two American flags in each foot. Stenciled "2" within circular border above. The jar shows a strong A.P. Donaghho influence in its potting and handle construction, suggesting it was likely made at the firm of Alderman & Scott in Belpre, Ohio, an operation located directly across the Ohio River from Parkersburg, West Virginia, where Donaghho's pottery was located. Areas of staining. A 3/4" chip to proper left handle. H 9 1/2".
