Rare Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Rutile Decoration, attributed to David Drake at Lewis Miles's Stony Bluff Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1852-1853, ovoid jar with deeply-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and arched tab handles, the surface coated in a mottled olive alkaline glaze with dramatic white rutile (titanium dioxide) runs throughout, a scarcely-seen treatment in Drake's work. Shoulder incised with Drake's horseshoe hallmark and two punctates, denoting two gallons. A well-known jug displaying a similar rutile application, inscribed "Lm / Oct 26- 1853 / Dave," resides in the collection of the American Folk Art Museum. A second related jug, inscribed "Lm / June 10- 1853," was sold in Crocker Farm, Inc.'s Spring 2020 auction, lot 12. A beautifully-glazed example of Drakes' work. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. Losses around rim. A 6" inverted Y-shaped hairline from rim. A narrow 1 1/8" in-the-firing base flake. H 10 1/4".
