Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Decoration, Shinnston, WV origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with freehand "5" surrounded by dashes, flanked by vertical vining. Two freehand stripes below rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Large areas of restoration to cracks in body of jar including some touch-up to cobalt. An approximately 6" diagonal crack at base on reverse, continuing as a restored crack. A restored crack across underside. A salt drip at base. H 15 3/4".
