Outstanding Sixteen-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "JAMES HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO, PA," circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with undulating fuchsia vines and straight and wavy stripes on the upper two-thirds of the vessel, interspersed with James Hamilton maker's stenciling in block letters. Further decorated below with a brushed undulating vine and a freehand "16" within circular, spotted border flanked by graduated stripes, all underscored by a straight and wavy stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Wonderful top-to-bottom decoration and excellent size. Provenance: Recently surfaced in a Pennsylvania. Very nice condition with a thin 8" crack from rim on reverse and some staining, primarily to reverse. H 22 1/2".
