Rare Glazed Redware Sugar Bowl Lid with Bird Finial, attributed to James C. Mackley or Anthony W. Bacher at the Big Hunting Creek Pottery, Mechanicsville (now Thurmont), MD, circa 1875-1885, wheel-thrown lid with rounded edge and flattened top surmounted by a hand-modeled and applied bird with incised wings, feeding at an applied and incised flower blossom. Surface decorated with splashed manganese and covered in a clear lead glaze. Loss to bird's beak. Otherwise excellent condition. Diam. 4 1/4" ; H 2 3/4".
