Rare Pair of Black-Glazed Redware Vases, Stamped "JOHN BELL," Waynesboro, PA, circa 1880, each potted with an ovoid base, tall, slightly-flaring body, and raised, flaring collar with tooled rim, each coated on the exterior with a greenish-black gun metal glaze composed of lead and a high concentration of copper as well as on the interior with a clear lead glaze over an orange ground. Underside of each impressed with John Bell maker's mark. A fine lot exhibiting a rarely-seen modernistic approach to Bell's work in both glaze and form, likely influenced by the rising American Art Pottery Movement. Taller vase with light rim wear. Both in otherwise excellent condition with some extremely minor surface wear. H (of taller) 9".
