Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Bird and Floral Motif, Stamped "W.H. FARRAR & Co. / GEDDES, N.Y.," circa 1850, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a large bird with heavily-striped body and solid-cobalt wing, standing on a stylized fence or ground accented with upward swags. A large brushed and slip-trailed daisy plant appears beside the bird with two cobalt-filled blossoms; a slip-trailed "2" is inscribed on the opposing side of the bird. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. A particularly fine rendering of a classic Farrar motif, displaying an unusually large bird and superb color. Provenance: Waasdorp American Pottery Auction, Clarence, NY, March 14, 2008, lot 78. A restored vertical Y-shaped crack on jug's proper left side, extending from base to shoulder with part of the Y extending above bird. No touch-up to cobalt. Some staining to jug's proper right side. A minor chip and minor piece of adhered clay to top of spout. H 14 1/2".
