Two Half-Gallon Cobalt-Stenciled Stoneware Jars, Western PA and WV origin, circa 1875, both of semi-ovoid form with tooled shoulders and semi-rounded rims, one with stenciled shield surrounding the maker's stenciling, "JAS. HAMILTON / & CO. / GREENSBORO / PA;" the other stenciled "RICHEY & HAMILTON. / PALATINE. / W. VA," with stylized foliate motifs. Provenance: From a fifty-year VA collection. Hamilton jar in very nice condition with some mottling to surface and minor wear to cobalt. Palatine jar in very nice condition with some mottling and a faint 2 1/4" vertical surface line near base, not visible on interior. H (of Palatine jar) 7 7/8".
