Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Shinnston, WV origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with vertical vining flanking a cobalt-script "3" with graduated dashes above and below. Freehand stripes below rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Fully restored underside. Some in-the-firing contact marks to surface and rim. H 13 7/8".
