Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Large Chicken Decoration, Stamped "ALBANY NY," probably R. O'Connell Pottery, Albany, NY, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a boldly slip-trailed design of a chicken with heavily-feathered body in walking stance atop a stylized ground featuring abstract, oval bushes with spots. Slip-trailed "4" above. Excellent size to decoration and color. Provenance: William Bouck Collection. A small chip to exterior of rim. A partially-restored 10 1/2" crack from rim on proper right side of crock's front, extending through chicken's neck, the restoration starting to bubble and yellow. Additional partial restoration to curving crack on proper left side of crock, extending through oval bush behind chicken. This crack is also starting to bubble and yellow and continues onto underside as a short unrestored crack. Minor scattered exfoliation to reverse and proper right side of rock. A short vertical line at base on reverse and some minor green paint residue at base on reverse. Flaking and water glass staining to interior. H 11 5/8".
