Rare Three-Gallon Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "I. Gay," Isaac Gay, Union County, NC, circa 1870, ovoid jar with sharp, angular rim molding and distinctive pocket handle with depressed embellishments. Surface covered in a clear salt glaze with heavy greenish runs to one side. Incised "I. Gay" vertically on one side. Incised "3" to shoulder on front and reverse. Isaac Guy's handprints are visible near the base of the jar, created when the piece was removed from the wheel. Classic form with visually-appealing handle style. Rim chips. A thin 4" crack from rim. Various in-the-firing surface lines, not visible on interior. Tight crack extending across most of underside, continuing 3 3/8" onto base, where it forms an inverted J. H 14 1/2".
