Exceptional Manganese-Decorated Redware Ale Mug, Stamped "J. BELL," Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840, thin-walled, finely-potted mug of ovoid form with coved and footed base, and tall collar, decorated with a rarely-seen sponged manganese pattern of vertical columns joined by two horizontal bands, interspersed with splotches, all above a series of large sponged ovals. Additional sponged manganese decoration to handle. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Top of rim with small chips and wear. A hairline across underside, continuing 2 1/2" up base of mug. A 1" base chip and smaller base chip. Light surface wear around midsection. H 7".
