Scarce Large-Sized Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SOLOMON BELL," Winchester or Strasburg, VA, circa 1845, ovoid jar with flared collar and extruded lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with a large horizontal stem bearing open-centered tulips. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed with early-period Solomon Bell maker's mark below one handle. Jar measures approximately six gallons. A 3 1/2" shallow area of in-the-firing chipping (contact mark) to top of rim. A few other rim chips. Exfoliation to base area. Some small in-the-firing flaws to surface. A large fork-shaped surface crack to underside, not visible on interior and likely in-the-firing. This crack continues as a faint curving line onto base area of jar. Some exfoliation to interior. Minor traces of old white paint to exterior. H 15 3/8".
