One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, attributed to Emanuel Suter, New Erection Pottery, Rockingham County, VA, circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, brush-decorated with four inverted swag motifs around the shoulder. Stamped with one-gallon Suter capacity mark on top of rim. Provenance: Acquired by the consignor's parents from Emanuel Suter's granddaughter, Mary E. Suter, on April 24, 1982. A large, tight spider crack to body, extending onto underside, partially visible on interior. Vertical lines and crazing to rim/shoulder area. Two in-the-firing pings to body. H 8".
