Five-Gallon Stoneware Pedestal-Based Water Cooler with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "SOMERSET, / POTTERS WORKS", Somerset, MA, urn-shaped cooler on attached pedestal base with applied lug handles and rectangular bunghole embellished with impressed screwheads. Front decorated with two large incised and cobalt-accented designs of birds with turned heads, perched on stylized branches. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals, makers' mark, capacity mark, and screwhead embellishments. Includes wooden lid and spigot. Among the most distinctive and prized products of this pottery, and the largest of its kind that we have seen. Restoration to rim on reverse. Tight lines to right side of cooler and area where cooler meets its pedestal base. Some lesser tight lines to left side of cooler. Exfoliation to Albany slip on interior. H 19 1/2".
