Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Stenciled Cobalt Eagle Motif, Stamped "BROWN BROTHER , / HUNTINGTON, / L.I.," New York State origin, circa 1870-1885, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a stenciled design of a flying Federal eagle with shield across its chest. Light cobalt accents to maker's mark and capacity mark. Relatively few examples of Brown Brothers stoneware with this design are known. A large inverted Y-shaped surface line to reverse, a large inverted Y-shaped surface line below proper right handle, and a large cross-shaped surface line below proper left handle, none of which extend through to interior. A small chip to proper left handle. A minor base chip. Some water glass staining to interior. H 9 7/8".
