Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Decoration, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / MANHATTAN, WELLS / NEW-YORK," early 19th century, ovoid jug with footed base and heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted wreath motif below the large, cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of Clarkson Crolius, Sr. Additional brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Desirable early-period stamp. Provenance: From a fifty-year VA collection. Front shoulder with in-the-firing flake (contact mark) and salt residue. A base chip and minor base nick. A small Y-shaped line on underside, part of which extends a few inches up base of jug. Surface wear. H 14".
