Extremely Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAW'S / STONEWARE / NEW.YORK," Thomas Commeraw, Corlears Hook, NY, early 19th century, highly-ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded spout, decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif resembling a clamshell, flanked by two additional, vertically-impressed drape-and-tassel motifs. Impressed below with the maker's mark, "COMMERAW'S / STONEWARE / NEW.YORK." Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jug is distinguished as one of only a few known examples of signed Commeraw stoneware ending in the words, "NEW.YORK," as opposed to "N.YORK." A large restored area to spout. A 7/8" in-the-firing base chip. Typical in-the-firing flaws to surface. H 14 3/4".
