Rare Sgraffito Redware Plate with Elaborate Tulip Plant Motif, Southeastern PA origin, Dated July the 9 1821, with coggled edge, the lead-glazed interior coated in yellow slip and decorated with a large tulip plant bearing four blosoms and numerous buds emanating from a heart at the dish's base. Shoulder inscribed with the date, "July the 9," the surface further inscribed below with the large date, "1821." A well-decorated example of early redware featuring classic Pennsylvania German iconography. This work survives in good condition for its type with some professional restoration to glaze flakes mostly relegated to the base of the plate (5 to 7 o'clock area) totaling roughly 10% of its glazed surface. A few minor rim chips. Diam. 10 7/8".
