Very Rare One-Gallon DEMUTH'S SNUFF Stoneware Jar, Stamped "THE P.S. CO. / YORK, PA.", The Pfaltzgraff Stoneware Company, York, PA, late 19th century, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and flared collar , the front featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "DEMUTH'S / CELEBRATE / SNUFF / ESTABLISHED / 1770 / LANCASTER. PA.". Reverse with Pfaltzgraff maker's mark. Pieces of this type, featuring the same stenciling as this jar, were usually made by Frederick Cowden of Harrisburg, PA. This jar is the first example we have that was signed by Pfaltzgraff. The fact that the same stencil was used by both Cowden and Pfaltzgraff is interesting and suggests that Demuth owned its own stencil to be used by different potteries. Excellent condition with some light chipping to base and one minor rim chip on reverse.
