One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON, VT," circa 1860, semi-ovoid jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Includes wooden stopper. Provenance: From a fifty-year VA collection, acquired from Ed & Elaine Casazza Antiques, Kezar Falls, ME. Chipping around spout. A 2 1/2" hairline from spout. A smooth chip and wear to handle. Two deeply-worn grooves on side of jug. "J." and "N" of maker's mark absent. A small chip to underside. H 11 1/2".
