Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Spittoon, Inscribed "The Study," attributed to F.B. Norton, Worcester, MA, circa 1858-1877, cylindrical form with flared base, tooled rim, recessed circular opening in top and carved circular opening in side, featuring the slip-trailed inscription, "The Study," between two cobalt bands. Likely made for the study in a large house or hotel, possibly one of several inscribed for different rooms in the building. Thin Y-shaped crack across underside, including a crack extending from base to rim. Two small base chips. A minor nick to top edge. Diam. 11" ; H 7 1/2".
