Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Quail Decoration, probably Penn Yan or Geddes, NY origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a quail with crested, turned head, heavily-feathered body, and raised leg, standing atop a stylized ground with shrub. Slip-trailed "4" above. Distinctive bird motif related to designs found on pieces from the John Burger, Jr. pottery of Rochester, New York. Excellent condition with a 7/8" in-the-firing ping to proper right side of jug. H 18".
