Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Petersburg, VA origin, mid 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated on the front and reverse with two different vertical flowering plant motifs. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: Recently excavated at a North Carolina residence dating back to 1798. Rim misshapen. A small base chip. Surface wear. In-the-firing contact marks to surface including some chips. A thin 3" crack from rim. A few small rim chips. H 11 3/4".
