Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated on the upper body with an undulating vine bearing three tulip blossoms. Further decorated below with a freehand "4" flanked by looping lines between two wavy lines. Freehand straight and wavy line decoration below rim. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Staining to surface. Otherwise excellent condition with minor flaws including a tiny nick with short line in proper right handle, some minor surface wear, and a salt drip at base on reverse. H 14 3/4".
