Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," NY State origin, circa 1870, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a crested bird with fan-shaped tail, perched on a vine. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark and capacity mark. Faint traces of a second stamp of the maker's mark below the first. A shallow chip to exterior of spout and minor nick to interior of spout. A contact mark to top of handle including some clay and salt residue. A small chip to side of handle. A lime ping to underside of jug along edge. Some oversalting and light wear to surface. Fry to end of bird's tail. H 17".
