One-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, Stamped "N.A. WHITE & SON, / UTICA, N.Y.," circa 1885, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a bird with paddle-shaped tail, perched on a vine. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Desirable size. A 1 1/2" flaked section to interior of rim. An additional small chip to interior of rim. A few other very minor rim chips. Two thin 3 3/4" cracks from rim on reverse. A small base chip on reverse. A 7/8" flake to underside along bottom edge. Staining to surface. A small chip to proper left handle. Some residue to base of rim. A short, glazed-over in-the-firing surface fissure to rim on front, which does not extend through to interior. H 6 7/8".
