Exceptional Stoneware Harvest Jug with Profuse Cobalt Slash Decoration, Marked "JOHN EBNER," OH origin, circa 1885, domed form with wide and narrow pouring spouts, applied branch-form handle, button-shaped finial, and incised bark surface, profusely-decorated with cobalt slashes throughout the body. Cobalt stripe decoration to larger spout. Cobalt highlights to smaller spout. Shoulder inscribed with the embossed and cobalt-highlighted name, "JOHN EBNER." Ebner is listed in the 1900 U.S. Federal Census as a "Retired Potter," aged 78, born in Germany and living in Canton, OH. Featuring exceptional color and bold decoration with a wonderful folk aesthetic, this work is among the most striking examples of the form that we have offered in years. Most of handle broken off in one large piece and reglued. A 1/2" chip to larger spout. H 10 3/4".
