Unusual Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt and Manganese Decoration and "1863" Date, probably Midwestern origin, 1863, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a brushed manganese and cobalt tulip motif, applied over slip-coated clay. Incised "1863" below decoration. Incised "4" at shoulder on front and reverse. Unusual two-color decoration and desirable Civil War era date. A 4" crack from rim on reverse. A 1 3/4" chip to one handle and a 1 7/8" chip to opposite handle. Two chips to exterior of rim and two adjacent chips on interior of rim. A base chip and minor base nick. Some losses to slip coating.
