Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Modified Watchspring, Manhattan, NY or Cheesquake, NJ origin, late 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a slip-trailed variant on the classic watchspring design, accented with spots on the interior. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. A sealed 5" crack from rim. Two additional short lines from rim on same side. A chip to exterior of rim. Two chips to interior of rim. A small in-the-firing iron ping to top of rim. A crack on underside, which extends 6" up side of jar where it forks. Additional surface lines, primarily to underside, extending onto base area, all of which likely occurred in the firing. A few minor base nicks. Some staining.
