Unusual Glazed Earthenware Spittoon, possibly J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, late 19th century, with footed base and flared rim, decorated on two sides with a molded and applied design of a hand holding a rose, the top surface with impressed circle border. Surface covered in a streaky lead-and-manganese glaze. This spittoon, consigned from the Shenandoah Valley, features a molded hand-holding-rose motif found on wall pockets produced by J. Eberly & Company of Strasburg, VA. The molded design on this spittoon, however, differs slightly. This spittoon, produced from a light-buff clay, is possibly the Eberlys attempt at producing Rockinghamware. A glazed-over base chip. Two restored rim chips. H 4 1/4" ; Diameter 8 3/4".
