Unusual Two-Gallon Stoneware Lidded Jar with Cobalt Tree Decoration, Stamped "LYONS", New York State origin, circa 1850, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky brushed design of a tree emanating from a stylized ground, flanked by grass. Slip-trailed number 2 above. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Includes a salt-glazed lid, probably original to the jar. An appealing and difficult-to-find decoration. A long crack on underside, extending up reverse and curving onto midsection of right side of jar. Rim chips. A small chip to right handle. Lid broken in half and reglued, with chips to knob.
