Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Butter Crock with Stenciled Cobalt Rose Decoration, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO. / PA", circa 1875, cylindrical crock with tooling to shoulder and rim, the front featuring the stenciled signature "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO PA". Large cobalt stripe below rim. Center of signature with stenciled rose motif. Desirable form. A 5" hairline from rim on reverse. A large Y-shaped hairline onderside, which partway up front of crock, curving into the letter "H" in "HAMILTON". A 3 1/4" inverted Y-shaped separation crack on interior of rim, which occurred in the firing and is not visible on exterior. A small chip to interior of rim. A few minor chips to lower rim molding. Some minor surface wear to rim. H 5 1/4" ; Diameter 8 1/2".
