Fine and Rare Shenandoah Valley Redware Pitcher with Marbled Glaze, Stamped "BAECHER / WINCHESTER, VA," circa 1885, ovoid pitcher with slightly-flared collar, pinched spout, and ribbed strap handle with triangular terminal, the surface colorfully-decorated with splashed manganese over yellow slip. Interior and exterior covered in a clear lead overglaze. Impressed with Anthony Bacher maker's mark, "BAECHER / WINCHESTER," on underside. A nicely potted and glazed example by one of the Shenandoah Valley's most highly-regarded potters. Provenance: Ex-H.E. Comstock. Two base chips. Professional restoration to a large section of rim on one side, along with restoration to a 4" long U-shaped crack which extends from rim to shoulder on same side. Restoration to section of rim on opposite side of pitcher. Restoration to spout. Some light tiny flakes to surface on reverse. A few nicks to handle and a 1/2" glaze flake to midsection of handle. H 8".
