Estimate: $1,000-$1,500. About Estimates   About Shipping

Minimum Bid: $250.

An estimate is an expected selling price for an item at auction. The price ranges for each lot are considered conservative in value, and are listed as a courtesy to our bidders to give them an idea of how much they may be expected to pay to win the item. It is entirely possible for an item to sell for less or more than the given estimate.

Unlike almost every major auction house in the country, we handle our own shipping in-house. We understand how frustrating it can be to have to work with third-party shippers to have your objects delivered to you. Meanwhile, we also understand how important it is for you to receive your objects safely. We have over 40 years of experience safely packing antique ceramics. By default your invoice will include a shipping total via UPS Ground; you can also, of course, pick up objects at our gallery. Please feel free to contact us if you would like a quote. (A very few lots will have notes at the end of their descriptions letting you know that the object is too big or fragile for us to handle shipping ourselves.)

Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Large Cobalt Floral Decoration, Incised "John S. Clemmer / Mogadore Summit Co / Ohio", mid 19th century, ovoid jug with tapered spout, decorated with a large brushed tulip motif with dashed blossom, emanating from a leafy stem. Incised at the shoulder with the inscription "John S. Clemmer / Mogadore Summit Co. / Ohio" above an incised pointing hand. This jug was made and signed by documented abolitionist and potter, John S. Clemmer (1825-1875). Clemmer, along with his wife, Maria, operated an Underground Railroad safehouse for slaves of the Ohio River Valley. In 1861, Clemmer joined the Ninth Ohio Volunteers and suffered a serious injury on June 9, 1862 at the Battle of Port Republic, Virginia. We are aware of no other American stoneware potters who have been documented as having a significant role in the Underground Railroad. This jug combines classic Ohio form and decoration with outstanding historical significance. Literature: Mary Ellen Snodgrass, The Underground Railroad: An Encyclopedia of People, Places, and Operations, (Routledge, 2015). Provenance: Crocker Farm, Inc., July 16, 2016, lot 342. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with minor wear to base of handle. H 15 3/4".
