Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Stamped "SMITH, JR.," Samuel Smith Pottery, Knox County, TN, circa 1820-1830, ovoid jar with footed base, applied lug handles, and rounded rim with inner flange for lid, the surface covered in a reddish-brown iron wash and covered in a clear salt glaze. Impressed with "SMITH, JR." maker's mark below one handle. Provenance: Wahler states the following about this jar in her notes: "I purchased this piece from NY. It was my first Smith, Jr. piece. We already had the Smith flask." Essentially as-made condition with in-the-firing misshapen areas, a small in-the-firing ping near midsection, and some whitish residue to midsection. H 13 3/4".
