Rare Manganese-Decorated Redware Jar with Lid, Southwestern VA or Eastern TN origin, Dated 1854, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and ribbed strap handles with depressed terminals, the lead-glazed surface featuring vertical swathes of manganese against an amber, iron-flecked ground. Includes original domed lid featuring the incised date, "1854," its lead-glazed surface featuring large manganese daubs against a cream-colored ground. Wahler states the following about this jar in her notes: I was really glad to get this jar. I had seen it earlier at Billy's. I do not know where it was made. Neck looks VA. It is possible that it was made in Greene County, TN." Jar in very nice condition with minor surface wear, an in-the-firing contact mark to rim and shoulder, a smaller in-the-firing contact mark to midsection, and a small piece of glazed-over clay near base. Underside with a flaked glaze drip, possibly in-the-firing. Lid missing finial, with two in-the-making glaze skips to top, shallow chipping to outer edge and flange on underside, as well as a 7/8" flake to flange on underside. H (including lid) 7 1/2".
