Six-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Impressed Horseshoe, probably Pottersville Stoneware Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1839, ovoid jar with flared base, thin, semi-rounded rim, and arched lug handles, the surface covered in a light-colored alkaline glaze. Incised with six small diagonal slash marks at shoulder, denoting six gallons. A small stamped horseshoe appears at the base. Likely made at Pottersville circa 1839, when the mark, "N. RAMEY & CO.," was used, as a jar bearing this stamp shows closely-related diagonal slash and horseshoe markings. Large reglued sections to upper half including coloring along breaks. A long, thin crack descending from this damage on front. Base chips. A chip to one handle. H 17 3/4".
