Extremely Rare Large-Sized Salt-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Inscribed Twice "AJ Lafever," Andrew Jackson Lafever, White County, TN, circa 1835-1850, ovoid jar with flared rim and distinctive angular lug handles, the surface covered in a salt glaze. Incised at the shoulder on each side with the signature, "AJ Lafever." Andrew Wesley Lafever, Jr., (1814-1850s), also known as Andrew Jackson Lafever. Lafever likely worked at his father's pottery in White County, TN until the latter's death in 1847. Lafever would then establish his own shop in a different part of White County, which became part of Putnam County in 1854. Regarding this jar, Wahlers states in her notes, "2.10.18 Never let it be said that I do not 'listen' to the pots. I knew this was an early Lafever. CW." Possibly the only signed example by this potter known. A 1 1/4" area of chipping to interior/top of rim. Two minor chips to one handle. Extremely minor wear to opposing handle. Some grease residue to surface. H 14 3/4".
