Very Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Bowl with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, with rounded sides, tooled shoulder, and flattened rim, brush-decorated with the profile of a man's face emanating from a crescent-shaped bough of leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Iconic Central Pennsylvania decoration and desirable form. Several rim chips. A 1" in-the-firing chip to underside along bottom edge. Some light wear to cobalt. Diam. 11 3/8" ; H 5 1/2".
