Very Rare Ten-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES . STAR / POTTERY." and "CHAS WOOLV / ERTON," Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, semi-ovoid churn with flaring collar, tooled rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with an undulating, flowering vine above Hamilton & Jones / Star Pottery maker's stenciling surrounding a stenciled rose motif and flanked by stars. Collar area decorated with freehand drapes and straight and wavy stripes. Base with freehand "10" flanked by dashes, underscored by a long stripe. Stenciled with possibly unique Charles Woolverton signature at base and on underside. Woolverton is listed in the 1870 Federal census as a sixteen-year-old who "labors at Pottery" living in Monongahela Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania. Professional restoration to significant cracks extending to underside including some small spots of touch-up to cobalt. Small unrestored chips to bottom edge of rim. Underside completely painted, covering the second Charles Woolverton stencil. Two unrestored vertial cracks to base area on front. H 21".
