Unusual Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Decoration of a Man's Head, Midwestern origin, probably OH, circa 1860, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flaring collar with semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, brush-decorated with a folk art design of a man's head in profile surrounding a freehand "6," applied over a slip-coated surface. Curved lines emanating from the figure's mouth may represent his tongue or convey that he is speaking. Very nice condition with some clay residue to top of rim, two in-the-firing contact marks near base on proper right side of churn's front, one base chip, and a few shallow surface flakes to base, possibly in-the-making. H 19 1/4".
