Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Harvest Jug, probably Upstate SC origin, late 19th or early 20th century, ovoid form with slightly-pointed finial and applied pouring spout on reverse, the front decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face including large ears, eyes within raised lids, Roman nose, open mouth, rounded cheeks, and chin. An arched handle originally extended across the top of the jug. Surface covered in a blackish alkaline glaze (possibly mixed with Albany slip) related to glazes found on Upstate South Carolina stoneware including pieces by Greenville County potters, Rich Williams and John Leonard Atkins. Consigned from a collection largely acquired from South Carolina homes, this origin seems likely. Provenance: From a fifty-year SC collection. Missing handle. Otherwise excellent condition. H 6 3/8".
